ISLAMABAD MOSQUE, TILFORD

Love for All, Hatred for None

The site was originally known as Sheephatch School and was initially a wartime evacuation centre in Tilford, established in 1939. After the Second World War, it was transformed into a rural centre for problem children of the suburbs of London then later turned into a regular boarding school until it closed in 1977.

In 1984, after seeking approval and guidance the land was purchased by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community and the Kalifa named it “Islamabad” meaning the place where Islam (peace) abides.

With the general deteriorating condition of the site, a plan was finalised and with the guidance and approval of His Holiness the Fifth Khalifa of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, it was submitted to Waverley Borough Council in 2014.

In early 2015, the Council granted building permission for a new mosque and other facilities.

A central feature of the major refurbishment plan was the new mosque complete with minarets, and that’s where we come in.

IJF Developments Ltd were approached by our existing clients, AMA UK based in London (who we are proud to be working with once again) and Beard Construction to get involved in the construction of the Dome and Minarets. Mosque Roof design by Sutton Griffin Architects and we helped with the construction using GRP Dome and Fins fixed to the steel support framework.

Our CAD/SOLIDWORKS were used to show the architect/client assembly of how the GRP segments would work prior to manufacture. On approval of the drawings, we then offered samples of the Copper effect metal that we can produce using GRP with the appearance of weathered patina green over extended period of years.

The Main Dome comprised of one dome and 32 fins including a glazed window in each fin as seen on the photographs. The components were manufactured to H41 Specification.

The Main Dome and fins manufactured with Copper effect metal which will patina over time and Gold Leaf GRP Finial.

The Minarets (two) were produced in the same way as the Copper effect metal, standing just over 13m high with each Minaret having a Gold Leaf GRP Finial.

IJF Developments manufacture a wide range of bespoke GRP features for the building and construction industry and offer a full service from the initial design concept through to on-site installation. We are fully conversant with the needs of architects and contractors to provide complete service to ensure the correct interface with other trades and almost any complexity or scale of work is achievable.
